The State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2018/19 estimates the value of Islamic finance assets to surge to US$3.8 trillion by 2023. Indicative of the sector’s growth is the fact that Islamic banking penetration in the GCC region increased from 31 per cent in 2008 to 45 per cent in 2017. The Islamic economy has proven its ability to keep pace with the latest developments in technology and investment, with companies progressively implementing blockchain for payments to ensure halal compliance. While conventional banking still boasts a slight edge with regard to the adoption of technology, there has lately been a perceivable increase in the use of digital banking, fintech solutions and blockchain-based investment platforms in Islamic finance, most notably in the GCC region.
